The popularity of Flash developed games has led to a continual barrage of available selections from on-line game developers and publishers on the World Wide Web. The convenience of playing the game directly from the browser without the need to download or install the game itself has contributed much to this form of gaming.
Flash games have been made through the years for the various game genres from Role Playing Games to simple but addictive Arcade Shooters. One of these games which has become quite popular is Gun Mayhem, a platform – side scrolling arcade shooter created by Kevin Gu.
Gun Mayhem’s popularity has reached a point where sequels had to be made as a follow-up by the developer. Initially released in 2011 by Armor Games, Gun Mayhem is now followed by Gun Mayhem 2 which came out in 2012.
The game focuses on a cute gung-ho character which you control who can jump, double jump and even triple jump in a parkour-like style while collecting weapons, items and power-ups. The objective is to get rid of a single or multiple opponents by shooting or dynamiting them off the platform onto obvious oblivion. However, this is easier said than done as the opponents, AI or otherwise will try their very best to do the same to you. This is how the game gets to be addictive as you take on challenge after challenge to knock all of them off the grid and complete the missions as the game progresses.
You begin the game by first creating your character which initially looks like a blob of some kind. You then get to choose your hat, your shirt, your face, your color and the initial weapon you will begin with. Study the selections well as the character you create will be the representative of yourself in this half-wit, fun-filled shooter of a game.
You have 3 game modes. Campaign will place you in different maps against AI opponents. Completing the missions or maps will let you progress through a series of these. There are 15 maps all-in-all excluding the Tutorial. Custom will let you play multiplayer up to 4 people. The catch, you have 1 keyboard for 4 people so this is going to be a real close if not crowded fight. Challenge lets you go against the AI opponents to test your skill in a timed environment. Complete the objectives in the fastest time possible to get a high score as it will show your time on the screen afterwards.
Regardless of which mode you choose, your half- wit (albeit, so cute!) of a character must do as you go up, down, left, right, shoot, dynamite and scream as you fall off the edge of the platform and hopefully not from your seat. The Campaign mode will get harder as you move on from mission to mission like Triple Jump, Invisible Man and Dynamite only among others (Did I mention 15?). Also, going through the tutorial is very much recommended as it gives you a feel of and what to expect from the game.
One of the things that Hoot-Out-Loud in this game is the weapons select. You’ve got automatic pistols, sub machine guns, sniper and automatic rifles, machine guns, launchers and shotguns. If you’re into serious FPS gaming like CounterStrike, Medal of Honor or Battlefield among a plethora of titles, the weapons selection will probably get you…get you laughing out loud! From the P90 to the AK47, it’s there. Just don’t expect them to behave the same way in the FPS game you play, and look, I think there’s no recoil, isn’t that lovely!
The platforms in the game can be hard to maneuver at times considering gravity seems to have taken a hike. The graphics are so cool and very colorful that they have this counter-monotony effect specially with those cute half-wits running around as you try to push them off and they don’t want to and keep coming back to push you off instead.
The music is so funky and matches the game play. Be warned however that this is not an easy game and the challenging levels will keep you coming back again and again and again… Gun Mayhem 2 Summary
